Red vs. Blue and Life vs. Choice

Hello Ladies!!

This week we have continued to address the topic of abortion and the different points of views around the world. We have specifically begun to discuss the opposing political viewpoints. I have posted some articles that provide examples which shed light on the opinions and norms of both Republican and Democratic parties below.

Before reviewing the articles reflect back on what we discussed in class on Wednesday in relevance to the different political party viewpoints (Red and Blue). What are their ideas on abortions? What reasonings can support these ideas?

The terms Pro-life and Pro-choice have been associated with the idea of abortion for years. Persons who are "Pro-life" are usually against abortions and believe that even if a baby has not been born he/she is still alive. In turn persons who are "Pro-choice" believe it is a woman's choice to decide to either continue or terminate a pregnancy.

Do you feel that the ideas of pro-life and pro-choice are sometimes altered (changed) or remain constant given certain situations? For example, and this may be harsh, but how might others (pro-life or pro-choice) reason a woman's decision to abort after having been raped? Or how might  persons, again pro life or pro choice, reason a woman's decision to continue pregnancy after being told she will die if she continues to carry a baby?

  1. I think that the varying nature of the pro-life/pro-choice debate really depends on each person you talk to, rather than a political party ideal. I know many women who are very pro-life, but agree that they would be unlikely to carry a baby from a rape situation to term. I also know many women who fervently believe in the pro-choice stance, yet swear that they would never have an abortion. The question of what to do in a possibly fatal pregnancy is also completely personal and depends on the woman and her partner's decisions.

Though these topics are widely debated at a political level, I believe that the choice remains solely in the hands of the woman. Whether or not she votes for a party which is pro-life or pro-choice, her decision will be based on what she believes is best for her in her unique situation, not what the state mandates/politically feels.

I think change is a constant in these situations because there is a distinct difference between people's political views and how they are forced to act in difficult or dangerous situations, such as those listed above. People might make decisions that are inconsistent with their original political views.

  2. I think this is a really good question t consider. Traditionally, red states or republicans, usually are pro life when it comes to abortions, they believe that teenagers should abstain from sex until married and if they become pregnant out of wedlock then they should not have an abortion. However, I am not sure if their views would change if a woman was raped or is told she will die if she continues the pregnancy. I would assume that they would be compassionate and understanding if someone was raped, and also understanding if the woman would die, afterall, they are prolife so they should accept the fact that some women will choose to save their own life before their unborn fetus. If the pregnant woman chooses to keep her baby despite being raped or having a life threatening pregnancy, I believe that a republican or red state would appraise her and say that she is brave and prolife as well. Aside from rape or a life threatening pregnancy, I believe their views will remain constant on prolife.

Democratics, or blue states, are pro choice. They believe that it is the woman decision to choose abortion or not when pregnant. Blue states are not as conservative as red states and therfore are not as strict on premarital sex or pregnancy. I believe that a democratics view on abortion will remain constant if a woman chooses to have an abortion after being raped or is faced with a life threatening pregnancy. If a woman chooses to keep her baby despite these issues, then I am not sure how a blue state or democratic would reason with this decision. I am curious to know how a blue state or democratice would reason with this decision, do you all think they would urge woman not to keep the child?

  3. I really liked this blog. It made me think about all these questions a lot. I don’t really know what to think about the ideas of pro-life and pro-choice being sometimes altered or remain constant given certain situations. In a way I feel like if you are pro-choice you are always going to say, have the baby no matter what. And if you’re pro-choice you will say it’s up to the woman. In the situation of a rape I feel like the circumstances might be different because your life is not at sake. The other way around, if you knew your life would be in danger if you had this kid, would just have to be up to that person and what they believe in. I agree that no matter pro-life or pro-choice your decisions can change either way, whatever that person thinks is best for them or the baby inside of them. Usually, red states or republicans, are pro life when it comes to abortions, they believe that teenagers should abstain from sex until married and if they become pregnant out of wedlock then they should not have an abortion. Blue states, or democrats, believe in pro-choice, where the woman decides what she wants to do. Do you think if you are strictly Red or Blue your decisions can only be which side of the government you are for? Is it honestly, one way or the other all the time? These are still the questions that stick when talking about abortions and who decides what and how.

  4. Coming from a mostly Catholic, Republic background, but being neither of those things myself, I am lucky to have insight into both ends of the spectrum. I personally wish that people cared less about whether or not they are Republican or Democrat and based their opinions on controversial subjects like this, not on what their political party thinks is right, but what they truly believe is right. Unfortunately for a lot of people, this isn't the case. Many believe that being Republican means being Pro-Life and being Democrat means being Pro-Choice. Being that so many people let their political beliefs define them and their personal beliefs, I think that even in the case of rape, majority of Republicans are going to remain Pro-Life and say that what happened happened and although it is tragic, it would be wrong to terminate the pregnancy. Obviously, Pro-Choice advocates are always going to say that it's okay to get an abortion. Therefore, I do think that a lot of people's ideas remain static whether the situation is harsh or not. Personally, I believe that being able to change your mind about these situations is important.

In response to Seqwinya's question, I don't think that Pro-Choice advocates would be against a woman keeping her child in either of those situations, even if it did end in death of the mother. I say that because being Pro-Choice is all about supporting the mother's decision and giving her the choice to do what she feels is best for herself. Though they may not be able to understand why she would choose to have the child knowing that she wouldn't survive the birthing process, I believe they would support her decision. That's just how I would see it anyway.
